Prominent industry experts join Dearborn’s Material Handling Systems division

With ProMat 2015 just around the corner, the Material Handling Systems division of Dearborn Mid-West Company (DMW) is poised for greater innovation and expansion. The recent addition of key design, engineering and operations personnel represents a leap forward on the Division’s path of aggressive growth. Four new team members—together with existing senior management—bring more than 160 years of combined experience to the table, raising the bar for hands-on knowledge and expertise. DMW’s newest team members comprise some of the top conveyor systems talent in the country. All four gentlemen have known each other and worked together for years, most recently at S&S Systems.

Stuart Tacy, Sr. has nearly 60 years of know-how in the design of material handling systems. He began his career in the industry in the late 1950s and is known today as a guru of distribution center design. His first positions were in the sales area for Alvey Conveyor and, later, Litton Unit Handling Systems (now Dematic). In 1972, Tacy, Sr. formed Boyson Conveyor Systems, a systems integrator primarily focused on the retail marketplace. In 1998, he co-founded S&S Systems with his son, Stuart, Jr. They grew the company from a two-man operation to a business that provided unique warehouse and distribution center solutions to some of the largest retailers in the country. At DMW, Tacy, Sr. will bring his far-reaching experience and expertise to bear on today’s modern system designs.

“The former S&S team is excited about being part of Dearborn’s growth. We’ve worked hard over the years building innovative and cost-effective systems for our customers. Now, as part of the Dearborn organization, we will provide those benefits to a larger and more diverse customer base,” said Tacy, Sr. “Bringing personnel with tremendous experience in the warehouse and distribution space together with the financial and human resources of Dearborn, we’re sure to create a win-win situation for our customers.”

Stuart Tacy, Jr. joins DMW as Senior Systems Engineer. He was the other “S” in S&S Systems. Tacy, Jr.’s 25 years of material handling systems experience dates back to his first industry job with Reliance Equipment Company. In 1989, he joined the applications engineering department at Boyson and, eventually, moved into sales. Later, he worked for Key Handling Systems in a similar role. At S&S, he wore many hats—doing whatever necessary to close sales and manage projects from initial concept and design through final implementation. His varied roles included sales, estimating and proposal development, systems design, engineering and project management. Tacy, Jr. brings substantial hands-on experience in the retail distribution and specialty store industries—including fulfillment and e-commerce—to the DMW team.

Michael McGrath has more than 30 years of experience under his ‘belt,’ moving from being a one-man conveyor division at Reliance in the 1980s to Partner at S&S in 1999. Along the way, he worked for Sandvik Process Systems, Boyson and Key Handling. His expertise encompasses all aspects of turnkey systems design: estimating and proposal preparation, system and component engineering, project management, purchasing, installation and start-up support. As Senior Systems Engineer, he will lead projects, perform overall systems design and system and equipment engineering, and play a key role in sales support. McGrath’s extensive experience with conveyor solutions and garment handling systems will serve DMW well.

Scott Yacono has 17 years of experience in the industry. He joined S&S in 1998 as an AutoCAD operator, admittedly knowing very little about material handling systems. Yacono stepped up to the challenge, working with and absorbing the knowledge of his S&S colleagues. He grew into new roles, such as creating AutoCAD and 3D concept drawings, estimating and quoting projects, and providing detailed engineering and systems sales support. As Design Engineer at DMW, Yacono will be responsible for developing proposal drawings and estimates, engineered systems drawings and order processing.

“Having Stu, Sr.; Stu, Jr.; Mike and Scott join Dearborn is exciting not only for our Division but also for the benefits our customers will enjoy,” said Joe Colletti, President of Dearborn’s Material Handling Systems Division. “We can provide unparalleled experience in the warehouse and distribution center markets at a competitive price and—with our Division’s unique ‘think tank’ approach—deliver the best and most innovative solutions to our valued customers. The addition of the former S&S personnel, as well as several other growth initiatives now in process, makes this a truly exciting time for the Dearborn Mid-West organization.”

DMW’s Material Handling Systems Division serves clients in a wide range of applications with turnkey material handling system solutions in three areas: Warehouses & Distribution Centers, Post & Parcel, and Industrial. The Division offers a unique level of competitive services and pricing to the mid-level market, priding itself on bringing projects in on time and under budget, along with creating systems matched to individual customer needs. By combining some of the industry’s best talent with the size, reputation and corporate capabilities of the Dearborn brand, the Division is primed for continued rapid growth.
