Holland Professional Driver achieves 3-Million-Mile Safety Milestone

Holland professional driver Richard Dain recently logged his 3-millionth consecutive mile without a single preventable accident. This makes Dain one of 35-active Holland drivers to have reached this incredible safety milestone.

The 3-million-mile record is an exceedingly rare accomplishment placing Dain among an elite group of professional drivers. To lend some perspective to this milestone, driving 3-million-miles is equivalent to making 6 round trips to the moon, or circumnavigating the globe at the equator over 116 times–without a single preventable collision.

“We are enormously proud of Richard and his safety achievement,” said Scott Ware, Holland President. “This record represents decades of constant vigilance and unwavering professionalism behind the wheel. His dedication to safety makes our highways safer, and helps Holland deliver award-winning service to our customers. We congratulate Richard on his accomplishment and thank him for his continued commitment to safety.”

Dain has been driving professionally for 36 years, the past 28 of which he’s spent with Holland. He operates as a line haul driver out of the Appleton, Wisconsin service center, making the 564-mile round trip to Minneapolis and back five-days-a-week. For the ten years prior, he drove the 566-mile round trip to South Bend. For the majority of his earlier years he drove turns through Milwaukee and Chicago twice a night. His routes take him through some of the country’s most challenging snow belts, making his safe driving record all the more remarkable.

A member of the Holland Safety Committee, Dain is also a driver mentor. He has been the Road Steward in Appleton for over 20-years and served on the Teamsters Union Local 563 Executive Board.

Dain grew up with trucking in his blood, inspired by his father and uncles. His father, Delmar Dain, retired from driving for Holland in 2002. His uncle, Kenneth Zimmerman, has driven for Holland more than 21-years and is also domiciled at the Appleton service center.

Holland is celebrating Richard Dain’s three-million-mile safe driving accomplishment at the Appleton service center on January 23, 2019. The celebration will include a luncheon and an award ceremony in which Dain will be presented with a commemorative 3-million-miler jacket, plaque, tractor decal and a personalized 3-million-miler ring. Coworkers, family members, Mark Oesterle from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, state representative Mike Rohrkaste, Captain Chaffee and Sgt. Beck from the Wisconsin State Patrol, and Holland management will be in attendance to honor his achievement.

Richard Dain lives in Greenville, Wisconsin with his wife Dawn. He has two children and enjoys hunting, fishing and camping. His lifelong love of travel recently included a trip to Alaska.
