Schreiner Group’s HSM solution comprises a small dark box resembling a conventional industrial PC. This device generates, stores and manages cryptographic keys that protect sensitive data against unauthorized access and tampering.
Compared to strictly software-based solutions, HSMs offer enhanced protection because sensitive information is coded and contained on-site in the specialized hardware. This approach provides added security and protection against unauthorized access.
Schreiner Group’s solution also stands out for its agnosticism. Many hardware-based systems utilize symmetric encryption (also known as “secret-key encryption”), a process that uses only one key for encryption and decryption. Other systems utilize asymmetric encryption, a concept employing a different key for encryption and decryption; this approach offers higher security but, accordingly, requires higher computing power.
