Episode 626: Anscer Robotics expands with heavy-duty hybrid solutions

Listen to this article

The latest episode of The New Warehouse Podcast features Mark Messina, Managing Director and CEO of Anscer Robotics. With decades of experience in robotics, including a formative role at Kiva Systems (now Amazon Robotics), Mark shares his journey, the origins of Anscer, and his perspective on the future of warehouse automation. Founded in India and now expanding across the Americas and APAC, Anscer stands out for its robust hardware and software design philosophy.

Messina highlights how the company’s roots in both durable engineering and strong software integration position it uniquely in a crowded automation market. He also shares insights into the broader trajectory of robotics—AGVs, AMRs, and now hybrid systems—while drawing on lessons from the rise of Amazon and the challenges of traditional brick-and-mortar companies.

Anscer Robotics: Building Robots That Last

Anscer’s foundation is a commitment to purposeful, rugged design. Messina explains that the company’s DNA comes directly from its founders, all roboticists with a passion for longevity and serviceability. “They’ve really focused on building robots that are purpose-built. They’re very robust. We have a very solid design… you’re not gonna damage our robot short of essentially crushing it.” Unlike competitors that prioritize speed to market, Anscer Robotics designs for sustainability, easy servicing, and long-term performance.

This durability extends to their software as well. With development rooted in India’s strong software culture, Anscer Robotics pairs robust hardware with intuitive interfaces accessible from a tablet or browser. This combination ensures not only uptime but also adaptability for customer operations.

Lessons from Amazon and the Evolution of Robotics

Messina draws on his early experiences at Kiva and Amazon Robotics to contextualize today’s automation landscape. “In 2012, I was with Kiva and witnessed and was part of Kiva becoming Amazon Robotics, which is really very few people have much awareness about.” That transformation reshaped fulfillment forever, spawning an industry of look-alike robots worldwide. But as Messina notes, building robots is only part of the equation.

Matching Amazon’s lean, agile culture is what many traditional companies could not replicate. “Amazon was kind of built fundamentally on the ground up as a lean and agile company… it was nothing for Amazon to decide and commit, and then if it didn’t work, change direction and go do something else.” In contrast, entrenched silos at legacy retailers slowed innovation, leaving them unable to capitalize on robotics fully. This history informs Anscer’s approach to market opportunities, particularly in Brownfield warehouses where agility and incremental automation are most valuable.

Hybrid Robots and the Future of Brownfield Automation

Looking ahead, Messina sees the rise of hybrid systems as a defining shift. Traditional AGVs offer precision, while AMRs provide flexibility around people and obstacles. Hybrids bring both. “The hybrid basically fuses the two robots together… we navigate using AMR until we get to that point where we need to be precise, and then we flip over to AGV.” This versatility unlocks applications not just in warehouses but also in factories, where precise handoffs are critical.

Anscer’s current portfolio includes pallet movers, tuggers, lifters, AGVs, AMRs, and hybrids, all engineered for long life cycles and low downtime. Brownfield operations, in particular, are ripe for disruption. “As I mentioned, I think it’s an underserved market and it’s due for some new players and also some innovation, and so that’s where we’re coming in at Anscer.” By combining robust build quality with hybrid flexibility, the company is carving out a differentiated role in both warehouse and factory automation.
