Stahlin® enclosures takes a trip back to the future, honoring its Hollywood Cameo

In an electrifying intersection of industrial manufacturing and pop culture, Robroy® team members Stephanie Ellis, Director of Marketing, and Joshua Bumpas, Marketing Project Manager, traveled to Dallas Fan Expo to meet members of the “Back to the Future” cast and have a special Stahlin enclosure signed.

Stahlin Enclosures had an important yet often unrecognized role in the iconic sci-fi film series. The company’s JW Series electrical enclosure served as the housing for none other than the flux capacitor — the fictional device that made time travel possible in Doc Brown’s DeLorean.

Stahlin’s J121006HPLW07 enclosure was the original model used to house the iconic flux capacitor in the beloved 1985 film. The on-screen unit has long been recognized by fans, and to honor that portion of Stahlin’s history, the company recreated the flux capacitor in the late 1980s. It has proudly remained on display at the company’s Belding, MI, location for almost 40 years.

“Knowing that something we built became part of such a legendary film feels surreal,” said Stephanie Ellis. “Stahlin has long been known for its commitment to quality and its products’ ability to stand the test of time. This piece has become more than a display — it symbolizes our team’s pride in making products that safeguard important electrical components, even during fictional time travel. To have it personally autographed by the cast is an incredible moment of recognition and gratitude for our company’s legacy.”

During the expo, Ellis and Bumpas had the opportunity to meet nine cast members from the film, including Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Elisabeth Shue, Tom Wilson, Claudia Wells, Donald Fullilove, James Tolkan, and musician Huey Lewis. Additionally, fans of the franchise in attendance were impressed by the replica’s authenticity and the story behind it.

Stahlin Goes Back to the Future

“As a long-time fan of ‘Back to the Future,’ I was delighted to discover when I first began working at Robroy that a Stahlin enclosure was used in the film,” said Joshua Bumpas. “Sharing this insight with fellow fans was a fantastic experience, and I was touched by the enthusiasm shown by members of the cast during our exchanges. I hope having this signed replica showcased in our facility will inspire future generations of Robroy employees to keep leading the way.”

The original enclosure model has since evolved, with a design update in the mid-1990s transitioning the gasket and window style to a flush bonded window. The part still exists today in the Stahlin catalog as model JW1210HPL, continuing the tradition of innovation and performance that began decades ago.

This signature moment ties past and present together, celebrating a cinematic classic and the real-world product behind it — a true example of Stahlin’s reputation for dependable, time-tested protection.
