Proper ohmmeter use

Listen to this article

Purkeys, a company focused on providing electrical solutions for the heavy-duty truckingindustry, wants heavy-duty vehicle technicians to know how to properly use an ohmmeter since using one improperly can cause a fleet to waste time and money.

An ohmmeter is one of the many functions of a multimeter, and is used to measure resistance in Ohms (Ω). Multimeterscombine multiple electrical diagnosis functions into one portable unit. Technicians use this tool to test a wide range ofsituations, including voltage drop, continuity checks, diode checks, capacity checks, etc.

In this video, Purkeys National Truck & Fleet Representative, Larry Rambeaux, shows how to properly use an ohmmeter.Knowing how to correctly use an ohmmeter is important because service manuals are written with the presumption that people know how to use and understand its readings properly. If technicians don’t understand what a manual or an ohmmeteris telling them, they can misdiagnose important issues and waste time working on the wrong issue.

The ability of a technician to properly use and understand an ohmmeter can do wonders for a fleet. That is why Purkeys offers a wide range of training on how to properly use every function of multimeters, including ohmmeters.
