There are few industries where safety is as critical as in nuclear power. Konecranes has been working with nuclear materials for over 50 years and provides a full line of equipment to cover every facet of nuclear plant operations. To help facilities meet the industry’s stringent standards for workplace safety, public health and the environment, they offer the Supersafe™ crane. This third generation single failure-proof design is founded on solid experience gained over decades of machine design, field installations and service support.

Konecranes designs, installs, and services single failure-proof cranes and other highly complex machinery for handling nuclear fuel. The Supersafe™ cask crane combines time-proven technology with the latest cutting-edge innovations for a reliable, durable cask crane. It is designed to greatly reduce the risk of accidental load drop, and can safely lower a load in the event of total loss of power. Multiple redundant features and fail safe operator controls are added so customers can trust their cask will be moved safely and efficiently.

To move spent fuel casks, Konecranes also offers vertical cask transporters. These efficient and reliable vehicles for moving most nuclear dry storage casks are easy to drive, load and unload, and can handle up to 350 tons. All cask handling systems have backups, such as dual tower support with safety catches for redundant drop protection. Extra travel motors ensure transporters keep moving. Additional safety features include overload protection, user monitoring, and fail safe operator controls. The transporter is able to maneuver in tight spots because of the ergonomic operator joystick, a tight turning radius, and full rotational capability in conjunction with the advanced steering software.

Konecranes nuclear Supersafe™ cranes and cask transporters meet all standards of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They are 10CFR50 Appendix B and NQA-1 compliant and follow the most stringent international safety requirements, including NUREG-0554 and NUREG-0612.
