Konecranes offers single-failure proof cranes for the nuclear power industry

Listen to this article

Konecranes has over 40 years of experience in designing and manufacturing single-failure proof cranes for the nuclear industry. This experience, combined with industry leading engineering expertise, has led to Konecranes’ third generation Supersafe™ single-failure proof designs that prevent load drops from any one system failure.

The nuclear power industry demands the highest levels of safety and reliability. Its regulations and standards are therefore some of the most stringent of any market. Konecranes offers ISO 9001, 10CFR50 Appendix B or NQA-1 Quality systems, manufacturing with in-house NDE capability, welding by American Welding Society certified professionals and compliance with all US and international standards.

Supersafe™ from Konecranes includes ergonomic operator interface, monitoring of crane limits, two-block and hung-load protection, emergency lowering that operates even without power and other system redundancies designed to prevent load drop. These include single-failure proof main hoist gear boxes, load balanced redundant rope reeving and redundant brakes including an eddy current back-up brake system – all to minimize uncontrolled motion if a failure occurs. The combination of these features makes Supersafe™ ideal for even the most critical nuclear operations, such as moving spent fuel casks.

For added confidence, Konecranes performs rigorous testing to understand how the equipment will function over long periods of time. As safety is the top priority for the nuclear power industry, Konecranes’ “Smarter Where it Matters” approach works to detect and solve any potential risks before the equipment is used in nuclear facilities.
