Single-head system delivers reliable in-line leak testing for unstable containers without disrupting production

ALPS Inspection is the global industry-leading manufacturer of non-destructive, in-line leak inspection equipment for empty plastic containers of all sizes, shapes, and materials. Today, ALPS Inspection announces the launch of the FlexPitch® Solo Moving-Head Leak Testing System—an innovative solution evolving from patented technology and engineered to address the challenges of testing unusually shaped or unstable containers.

Designed specifically for containers that are difficult to handle, such as tall, narrow, reverse-tapered, or oval shapes, FlexPitch Solo enhances container stability during inspection to deliver more accurate, repeatable leak test results while minimizing product waste. Its flexibility allows it to accommodate both challenging and standard bottle designs, helping to maintain consistency in the downstream process.

FlexPitch Solo is a single-station, moving-head pressure decay leak tester capable of inspecting containers ranging from 3 mL to 2 L at speeds up to 200 containers per minute. Mounting directly to existing conveyor lines with minimal to no transfers required, the system simplifies integration while reducing the risk of mishandling and false rejects.

“Unstable containers present unique challenges that can impact both handling and test accuracy,” said Jill Shearer, General Manager of ALPS Inspection. “FlexPitch Solo was developed to solve those challenges by providing a streamlined, dependable solution that improves inspection reliability while maintaining production efficiency.”

Utilizing a servo-driven moving-head design, FlexPitch Solo tracks conveyor speed with encoder feedback to synchronize head movement and follow each container during testing. This approach allows for precise probe alignment and consistent test conditions without stopping or disrupting the production line.

The system delivers 100 percent in-line leak and top-seal defect detection, supporting manufacturers across a variety of industries, including healthcare, pharmaceutical, and personal care packaging. Applications range from eye-drop bottles and small vials to slim mascara tubes, lotions, and haircare containers produced through ISBM, EBM, RSBM, and IBM processes.

Key features of the FlexPitch Solo system include:

– Moving-head pressure decay testing for enhanced container stability
– Direct conveyor mounting with minimal to no line modification
– Encoder-driven synchronization for smooth, continuous operation
– Servo-driven probe carriage for precise alignment during testing
– Intuitive full-color touchscreen HMI for simplified operation
– Toolless changeovers for faster setup and improved operator consistency

FlexPitch Solo is engineered for versatility and efficiency, with a compact footprint that allows for installation on even the most space-constrained production lines. Its design eliminates unnecessary transfers, reducing handling risks while improving overall test accuracy.

“The FlexPitch Solo system represents the next evolution of our proven leak testing technology,” added Shearer. “It enables manufacturers to confidently inspect even the most challenging container designs while protecting product integrity, reducing waste, and supporting consistent quality across production.”

Backed by ALPS Inspection’s comprehensive service and support, including installation, ALPS Peak Service Training, 24/7 technical assistance, and more, FlexPitch Solo provides a reliable, long-term solution for converters seeking to optimize both performance and quality assurance.
