Episode 75 – Caster Connection at MODEX 2020 In this episode, I was joined by Eric Hassen the Director of Business Development for Caster Connection at MODEX 2020. Caster Connection is your source for everything casters. On their site, they have every type of caster that you can imagine and they also provide a lot of great knowledge and resources for choosing the right casters. Eric and I discuss Caster Connection’s business and the ergonomics of push/pull. Key Takeaways Like I mentioned above, Caster Connection is the source for all things caster, and Eric is the caster master. Eric says that he could talk about casters all day and I believe him! Going into this discussion I just knew that casters were wheels and coming out of it I really learned how much of a difference the right caster can make. The concept of ergonomic push/pull is where the caster comes into play the most. When we discuss this concept it is about the movement of the table, cart, or object that is using the caster. As a human move these objects around by pushing or pulling, the force can start to create serious strain, especially in the lower back. Choosing the right caster helps to reduce the amount of force by creating easier, smoother movements of the object. Why is the right caster so important? Well because of the long term financial impact of poor ergonomics and the reduced productivity of an uncomfortable employee. While the caster may seem like a small thing, it makes a big impact due to the reduction in strain and force required to move heavier objects. Eric gives a great explanation of how the right caster can make a big improvement and how the right choices are made. Listen to the episode below and take some time to reassess your caster situation.

Two of The Raymond Corporation’s MODEX 2020 seminars have been chosen by MHI as MODEX 2020 Top Education Seminars. Raymond’s “Optimize Before You Automate 2.0” and “Trucks, Energy, Solutions – The Winning Trifecta” seminars provided industry-leading intelligence on how material handling operations can leverage existing resources to achieve increased productivity. Optimize Before You Automate 2.0 detailed the need for optimization before the implementation of new technologies, such as alternative energy, semi-autonomous and fully autonomous solutions, intralogistics solutions, and other integrated solutions. The seminar explained how factors like productivity, cost advantage, workforce development, and flexibility should all be considered when evaluating automation options. The speakers leading this seminar were Jason Fiume, iWAREHOUSE® professional services senior manager, Stacey (Patch) Barton, iWAREHOUSE professional services manager, and John Slavik, iWAREHOUSE national accounts sales manager. Trucks, Energy, Solutions – The Winning Trifecta discussed how misconceptions in the material handling industry can lead to missed opportunities for growth, compromising productivity, and efficiency. This presentation focused on how prioritizing and educating yourself on trucks, energy, and warehouse solutions will help when utilizing new technologies. Speakers for this seminar were Damon Hosmer, energy solutions product manager, and Jack Kaumo, iWAREHOUSE director of sales. “We are honored that MHI recognized these incredibly informative seminars,” said Michael Field, president, and CEO of The Raymond Corporation. “We pride ourselves on offering thought-provoking, critical conversations that lead to innovative solutions.” MODEX 2020 seminars are available to view online at modexshow.com/seminars.

Manufacturing and supply chain professionals converged on Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center last week as they came together for MODEX 2020 to find new equipment and technology solutions, gain knowledge and network with industry peers to solve common supply chain challenges. Based on the information from the WHO, CDC and local authorities at the time with regard to COVID-19, the MODEX 2020 expo was held as scheduled March 9-12 with 894 exhibits covering 355,790 net square feet. Adding in show floor theaters and networking areas, the total gross footprint of the MODEX show floor was 900,000 square feet. While registrations for MODEX totaled 33,460, representing an eight percent increase over MODEX 2018, actual attendance was 16,395 or 49% of that total due to COVID-19 travel restrictions which put MODEX 2020 on par with MODEX 2016 when it comes to attendance. MODEX exhibitors expressed enthusiasm for the engagement they received from visitors who attended noting that they were serious buyers looking for solutions for their manufacturing and supply chain operations. “I was pleasantly surprised and encouraged with the attendance given COVID-19 concerns,” said George Prest, MHI CEO. “More importantly, attendees had immediate needs for supply chain equipment and technologies and had buying plans in hand. We were very thankful for the 894 exhibitors that were on display. It says a lot about our industry and how we come together. The supply chain will be critically important during these challenging times.” Because of the number of registered attendees who could not attend MODEX plans are underway to create a virtual MODEX 365 experience after the physical expo. This virtual complement of the event will be available in mid-April. In the meantime, information on MODEX 2020 exhibitors and their solutions can be found at modexshow.com/directory.aspx?ref=attendees and MODEX show floor seminars can be viewed as podcasts at videos.mhi.org/category/modex-2020-podcast. MHIview also has posted a variety of videos from the show floor. “Manufacturing and supply chain executives who were not able to attend need access to the solutions of MODEX exhibitors now more than ever,” said Daniel McKinnon, MHI EVP of Exhibitions. “We are excited to offer this virtual component of the show to provide that access to our visitors who could not attend due to travel restrictions. We encourage them to visit modexshow.com now and often to gain the information and resources they need to power their supply chain operations in the future.” MODEX is the largest international expo of its kind held in North or South America. MODEX 2020 Highlights Attendees experienced a wide range of manufacturing, supply chain, and transportation equipment and systems solutions and education. The dominant trend at MODEX surrounded digital supply chain solutions including automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, the Internet of Things and data analytics. These trends were also evident in MODEX Supply Chain Conference sessions which included 140 educational seminars and four keynotes. On March 9, Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley spoke about her experiences in leadership and government. EMOTIVE’s Olivier Ouillier discussed how neurotechnology can improve supply chain workplace safety and productivity through data aggregation and analysis during the March 10 keynote. On March 11, MHI’s George W. Prest and Deloitte’s Thomas Boykin released the findings of the 2020 MHI Annual Industry Report: Embracing the Digital Mindset: Connecting Data, Talent and Technology in Digital Supply Chains during a panel discussion with a keynote panel of industry thought leaders. The March 11 afternoon keynote featured Archie and Peyton Manning who delighted the audience with funny and poignant accounts of their take on football, teamwork, and leadership. MODEX Industry Night with comedian Colin Jost was an exciting and entertaining networking event with over 1,200 attendees and exhibitors in attendance. The door prize for this event was a $30,000 Trip of a Lifetime that was won in a lucky draw by Margaret Papadelis of Yard Management Solutions. During this event, MHI announced the winners of several awards including the 2020 MHI Innovation Awards during MODEX. The MHI Innovation Awards serve to educate and provide valuable insights on the latest manufacturing and supply chain innovative products and services. The winners were: Best New Product: Agility Robotics for Digit Best Innovation of an Existing Product: OPEX for Perfect Pick HD & Sure Sort Micro-Fulfillment Solution Best IT Innovation: Yard Management Solutions for Yard Management Solutions In addition to the MHI Innovation Awards, the MHI Young Professionals Network (YPN) honored recipients with its annual awards. John Rosenberger from The Raymond Corporation was awarded the 2020 MHI YPN Mentor Award and Lisa Richardson from Hytrol was awarded the 2020 MHI YPN Outstanding Young Professionals Award. MODEX Student Days introduced 124 high school and university students and educators from 23 schools to career opportunities in material handling, supply chain, and logistics through hands-on learning and networking with industry professionals. This year’s Student Days combined an interactive educational session with a dynamic guided tour of the MODEX show floor. The next MHI-sponsored trade event will be ProMat 2021 held April 12-15 in Chicago’s McCormick Place. For more information on exhibiting at ProMat, or to register as an attendee, visit promatshow.com. The next MODEX will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center on March 28-31, 2022.

Tecsys Inc., an industry supply chain management software company, just announced that Delmar International Inc. has introduced operational and functional improvements to their 3PL warehousing and distribution business through deployment of Tecsys software and business intelligence solutions. The company is leveraging Tecsys’ warehouse management platform and extended capabilities across its two largest fulfillment centers. Founded in 1965, Delmar International is now Canada’s largest logistics service provider, offering cargo management and supply chain services locally and around the world. In order to grow their business and provide value-added services to their 3PL customers, the company has invested in top-tier technology that improves operational efficiency, streamlines information systems, and preserves Delmar’s world-class customer service. Following Delmar’s 2016 acquisition of a 3PL business running legacy software, the company identified an opportunity to outfit its warehouses with Tecsys’ modern software system and integrated platform to improve operations and be able to scale with Delmar’s growth trajectory. Implementation of the Tecsys solution enabled Delmar to provide comprehensive 3PL services to their warehousing and distribution customers while offering unique value-added services to attract new business. “This is an important and expanding business unit for Delmar International, and we are focused on delivering warehousing and distribution services that rise above the fray,” explained Managing Director of Delmar Logistics Jamie McLoughlin. “In Tecsys, we find a reliable software partner with a platform that can scale and adapt to the 3PL market and to our business needs.” “In a fiercely competitive 3PL market, providers are being challenged to run razor-sharp operations that are nimble and connected,” said Bill King, chief revenue officer at Tecsys. “It is in that environment that Delmar continues to outpace their competition and win customers. We are impressed by Delmar’s attention to customer service and an enviable reputation, and we are delighted to serve as a critical piece of that puzzle in their 3PL operations.”

As expected the first-day attendance at MODEX 2020 was down but the quality of attendees was” good” said many of the exhibitors when talking with Material Handling Wholesaler staff. The exhibitors who were interviewed were very sympathetic to the show producer MHI and to the pre-registered attendees who choose to not participate this year due to the unforeseen circumstances caused by the COVID-19 virus. MHI officials have been working at ways to bring the MODEX 2020 to the people who pre-registered by giving them a digital format to view the many exhibitors at this year’s show through a virtual experience to compliment the MODEX 2020 experience as if they were attending. Anyone who has registered with the show consisting of manufacturing and supply chain professionals will get links through a daily e-newsletter to participating exhibitors video recordings of what they are presenting at MODEX. The newsletter will also provide links to the sessions through podcasts from every MODEX show floor educational session. These podcasts will be posted on MHI’s new podcast portal available at videos.mhi.org/category/mhi-cast While some seminars have been canceled, many sessions are still going on throughout the show. When coming into the show floor or when you get your MODEX badge there are seminar boards that will tell you if a session is canceled. The MODEX 2020 show goes through Thursday, March 12th at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga. Click here for a recap of Day 1 activities.

Frazier Industrial Company, a manufacturer of structural steel storage systems, presented a new wire screen design at MODEX 2020, courtesy of J&L Wire. The new design utilizes an internal flare “tuck-in” style, as opposed to the industry’s current external flare style. It was conceived to create a solution for user issues – warping wire beds and jagged pieces of wire – commonly associated with the industry’s current design. “The biggest warehousing challenges faced with the current design are wires bending under the weight of products and being torn apart by fork trucks when loading ” explains Domenick Iellimo, Executive Vice President. “These two challenges result in the further issue of lost capacity. Furthermore, the wires can become jagged when they are warped. This creates the potential to cut the clothing of warehouse workers, or worse, cause an injury. The new “tuck-in” design immediately eliminates these risks and provides greater safety across the warehouse operation. It is valuable to warehouses in any industry, especially those that include hand-stacking or egress via tunnels as part of their applications.” The new design is a more cost-effective solution than its predecessor as well, which is a great value to warehouse leadership. A reduced manufacturing expense, allows us to pass along savings to the end-users. Whether a hand-stacking aficionado or full pallet storage pro, Frazier’s new wire screen design is for you. Come see and learn more about the new design during MODEX 2020. Frazier is located at Booth #8288 at the Georgia World Congress Center from March 9th – 12th.

After 20 years of incremental WMS Progress, Softeon Warehouse Execution System delivers step-change improvements in distribution performance Softeon, a global supply chain software provider with the industry’s best record of customer success, announced it will be featuring its new Warehouse Management and Execution System capabilities at the MODEX 2020 trade show in Atlanta, Ga on March 9-12. This powerful solution combines Softeon’s advanced Warehouse Management System (WMS) with the new Warehouse Execution System (WES). The WES provides visibility, orchestration, and optimization of order picking and related processes, which include maximizing materials handling system utilization, leveraging capabilities far above what is available today – even in advanced WMS. As a result, Softeon’s WES enables companies to minimize total fulfillment costs while meeting customer demand and service commitments. Softeon’s WMS and WES solutions are available stand-alone – or for the first time in the industry, deployed together as a powerful Warehouse Management and Execution System. In stand-alone mode, the WES can work with almost any existing WMS, from ERP to legacy to best-of-breed providers, with flexible integration and process models. Uniquely, the Softeon WES delivers significant value, not only for automated DCs but also in operations with medium levels of automation or even completely manual processes. This approach can bring new life to aging WMS environments without the need for a full WMS replacement. New WES capabilities include: Real-time visibility to throughput, bottlenecks, and events Direct management and optimization of picking sub-systems Advanced, configurable optimization for order batching, release, picking and replenishment Workload balancing to maximize equipment utilization and flow Automated order release based on service commitment, shipping schedules, and real-time condition monitoring Use of simulation to plan, re-plan and allocate resources Benefits of the new solution include double or even triple-digit improvements in productivity; reduced supervisory labor, increased distribution throughput, improved material handling system utilization, and significantly enhanced labor planning. “This truly is a game-changer in distribution Software, with Softeon now delivering on the promise of the autonomous WMS,” says Dan Gilmore, chief marketing officer at Softeon. Softeon will feature the new WES capabilities at MODEX Booth #7466.

MHI the producers of MODEX 2020 issued a statement on March 3rd regarding the COVID-19 Coronavirus and what they are doing to prepare for MODEX on March 9 – 12th in Atlanta, Ga. We understand concerns about COVID-19 Coronavirus are top of mind, and we want to be as transparent as possible and share information about what we are doing to prepare for MODEX 2020. For MHI, the producer of MODEX 2020, the safety and security of our exhibitors and attendees is our paramount consideration. We are closely monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19/Coronavirus and are following protocols that are provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We currently have over 900 exhibitors who have teams on-site setting up for the show, and we want to assure you of the following: Our top priority continues to be the health and safety of all participants at MODEX including attendees, exhibitors, vendors, staff, industry partners, and others involved in the show. We are proceeding as planned to hold a safe and successful MODEX 2020 in Atlanta, March 9-12 We are in daily contact with the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) who is working with both the GA Dept. of Public Health and the Fulton County Board of Health to gain insight on the spread of the coronavirus, health surveillance/screening efforts at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and updated data on possible impacts to the United States and Georgia. When it comes to MODEX attendance, we anticipate reduced international registrants especially from those in the most affected countries of China, Italy and South Korea due to travel restrictions. That said, advance registration is well ahead of the 2018 show and we anticipate 30,000+ attendees. We continue to receive record registrations this week. Most of our exhibitors are currently onsite moving in equipment and setting up their booth space. These exhibitors have been following the move-in schedule protocols and we anticipate all exhibitors will be moved in and ready for the shows’ opening day on Monday, March 9. MODEX 2020 FAQs Regarding COVID 19 What is Show Management doing to prepare for the show in regard to COVID-19? We are closely monitoring the news and will follow any protocols that are provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We encourage exhibitors and attendees to take common-sense precautions by using hand sanitizer and following these guidelines set by the CDC when they are onsite at the show. We are working closely with all show partners including the City of Atlanta, the GWCC, the airport authority and hotels to ensure the safety of all show participants. We are taking steps to address concerns by providing heightened levels of cleanliness, including: Before and during MODEX, GWCC staff will repeatedly sanitize high-traffic fomite areas (door handles, handrails, bathrooms, etc.) and provide additional hand sanitizing stations throughout the GWCC campus. GWCC is exceeding all recommendations by the CDC for cleaning and disinfecting public areas and will continue to amplify public health messages as needed. Out of an abundance of caution, MHI will install additional sanitation stations in multiple locations on the MODEX show floor and common areas for the duration of the show. Encouraging a “no handshake” policy onsite for all attendees and exhibitors. Has the show been impacted by COVID-19? Some of our international exhibitors and attendees have been impacted by COVID-19 due to the travel restrictions, and the spread of the virus in China, Italy, South Korea. Due to the travel restrictions resulting from COVID-19, many China-based exhibitors and attendees will not be able to participate in MODEX 2020. China-based companies with North American-based operations and staff (not impacted by the travel restrictions), will exhibit at MODEX 2020 as planned. Overall, the expected cancellations of attendees will have a very limited impact on the show. Visitors from outside North America represent around 12 percent of overall registrations to date. What happens if someone presents flu-like symptoms at the shows? Our first aid professional service provider will be readily available to provide medical assistance onsite to any individuals that need medical assistance. We have two first aid stations onsite at the show. At this time, any testing for COVID-19 would be managed by local hospitals and/or the CDC. How many registrants are from international countries? 88% of current MODEX registrants are from North America, the remainder are from outside the region. We expect international attendance from countries outside North America to be lower, especially due to countries impacted by travel restrictions. What are you doing to prevent those from high-risk areas from attending the shows? The initial travel ban from China has restricted China-based individuals from attending the shows. In addition, the ongoing quarantines from other countries, including Italy and South Korea, have also restricted some individuals from attending the shows. We are encouraging everyone to make responsible decisions to stay home if they are sick and to not travel if they are traveling from high-risk areas. This update is done as part of MHI’s commitment to the safety and security of our exhibitors and attendees. We advise that MODEX exhibitors and attendees always follow the care and hygiene recommendations recommended by the WHO and CDC while onsite at MODEX. Ultimately, we encourage everyone to make responsible decisions and stay home if they are sick. Our Show Management has dedicated resources to provide quick responses to inquiries related to COVID-19. Attendees and exhibitors with questions or concerns are encouraged to email Carol Miller at cmiller@mhi.org. We will inform exhibitors and attendees should there be any further updates to this statement. Our thoughts continue to be with all who have been impacted by the coronavirus.

Due to the concerns surrounding COVID-19 Coronavirus, Stellana will no longer be exhibiting at the MODEX 2020 show which is scheduled to run next week in Atlanta, March 9-12, 2020. In addition, Stellana had planned to pull their attendance from LogiMAT held in Germany the same week, but the show has since been canceled. The health and safety of our employees is our primary concern. As the coronavirus continues to spread worldwide and nationally, Stellana has decided that they will not be sending their team members to participate in the MODEX 2020 show. With an expected turnout of 30,000, the MODEX show brings together many visitors from throughout the United States and overseas, and there is a chance that the spread of the coronavirus will continue here. While Stellana looked forward to the valuable facetime with their customers, dealers, and vendors, they feel this is the best decision for the health and safety of its employees.

Confidex, a designer and supplier of short-range wireless identification solutions, announced the release of its Confidex Go Family of RFID labels for high-volume logistics and other applications. Confidex will demonstrate the entire family of Go Labels at the MODEX 2020 conference, March 9-12 in Atlanta, Georgia and at the LogiMAT 2020 trade fair, March 10-12 in Stuttgart, Germany. The Confidex Go family of RFID tags is targeted at industries that need a high volume of labels at an affordable cost, but without sacrificing performance. The Confidex Go family provides the same reliable performance found in Confidex hard tags but in a convenient label format. Confidex Go products include a variety of industry- and application-specific labels: Crosswave Classic provides 360-degree readability and a modular size. It is a dual-dipole label for logistics applications and provides a good reading performance and radiation pattern. Casey is a disposable, high-performance label for supply chain and logistics applications. The cost-efficient label is waterproof and works well with high-liquid-content goods. Leaf is a paper-based, sustainable label for short-term logistics applications. The eco-friendly label is plastic-free, includes a printed antenna and water-soluble adhesive, and is suitable for indirect contact with food. eKanban GTL is a master label designed for Global Transport Label (GTL) applications. This plug-in label for transport packaging units or plastic load carriers is compliant with VDA recommendations 4994 and 5501. eKanban SLC is a single label designed for Small Load Carrier (SLC) applications. It is a plug-in label for plastic and ESD load carriers and complies with VDA recommendations 4994 and 5501. Ferrowave Classic is optimized for high volume packaging and component tracking applications which require lower-cost, on-metal RFID labels in non-harsh industrial environments. Purpose-built and cost-engineered for tagging automotive components and consumer packages, the Confidex Ferrowave is the RFID label of choice for metallic foils and liquid containers which have historically presented challenges to RFID labels. Confidex Go labels are also designed to perform on a wide range of materials, including metal, plastics, paper, and cardboard. The Casey, Crosswave, and eKanban labels can be provided in customer-specific sizes depending on how much information needs to be printed on the face of the label “Confidex is known globally for manufacturing rugged industrial RFID tags and very high volumes of RFID tickets for transport,” said Timo Lindström, CEO of Confidex. “With Confidex Go we combine our experience of both best-in-class RF design and optimized end-to-end high volume production. The Confidex Go labels provide an industrial level of reliability in challenging environments, but in a more flexible and affordable format for emerging high-volume applications across the supply chain. The Confidex Go labels enable end-to-end visibility in a wide variety of industries, and in a format that can be easily customized for each organization’s unique needs.”
