For a quarter of a century, Material Handling Wholesaler has produced an issue dedicated to highlighting the work of women in the industry. The issue, called “Salute to Women,” has highlighted numerous women in companies worldwide whose influence and expertise are driving the industry forward. Today, many material handling organizations and publications also honor these accomplishments. This year, as Material Handling Wholesaler marks 25 years of the “Salute to Women” edition, the careers of several influential women in the business are featured. We asked the individuals participating about their career stories, business goals, and some of their favorite aspects of their work. Tina Gelhaus Gelhaus began her career with Crown Equipment 27 years ago. “I started as a Level 1 secretary, and I was bored,” said Gelhaus, who set out to secure new challenges and opportunities with her employer. She quickly amassed those opportunities, in one case designing a new program called SureSpeck for the TSP6000. From there, she moved on to a variety of different roles, including help desk, the training department, and software training. “Then I moved to the inflowing department and fleet management system,” Gelhaus said. She moved to Tinnacity four years ago and currently works as a senior customer experience manager, helping customers from the initial point of contact through kick-off and go-live with the technology “I love training technicians,” said Gelhaus, who breaks each training job into small sections. She added that she is a firm believer in creating an SOP for customers to follow for going live with the technology. Dave Tinnerman, founder and president of Tinnacity, said Gelhaus provides “exceptional” service. ” Tina’s dedication is unparalleled; she treats everyone like family, consistently going above and beyond to ensure their success with her unique blend of industry experience and technological expertise,” he wrote in the nomination for Material Handling Wholesaler. Tinnacity taps into over a century of industry and technology expertise to provide a field service mobile solution for material handling and industrial equipment. It offers a suite of web and mobile solutions and services, as stated on its business website. The company works with customers across North America as well as New Zealand and Australia, according to Gelhaus. Gelhaus first realized her passion for technology when she crafted an anniversary video for her parents as an 8th grader, armed with a camcorder and cassette player. In the years since, she said her interests in the industry have often aligned with great instructors. “I’ve had a lot of great teachers throughout my career,” she said, advising others working in material handling to harness their self-confidence. “Don’t doubt yourself. Go for it. If you fail, you learn from it,” Gelhaus said. Hannah Sprouse Sprouse received her college degree in the area of merchandising and the science of textiles. After college, she landed a job in the material handling industry. “Once I got into it, I was hooked. I truly love it,” she said, recalling how one of the first technicians she worked with spotted her aptitude for work in the industry. “He said, ‘You’re going to be in this industry forever.’ And here I am, 13 to 14 years later,” said Sprouse, who is customer service sales manager for Southwest ToyotaLift. She covers all of the aftermarket with her team of nine reps. Southwest ToyotaLift is a division of Southwest Material Handling, Inc., which was established in 1989, according to its website. The company has continued to “use innovative technology to serve our customers better while maintaining our family-oriented culture,” the site said. Sprouse serves as a bilingual CSS Manager for Toyota Forklift Dealerships and earned the Toyota Aftermarket Manager of the Year 2024 award, according to her nomination. “She built a team of CSS across four branches, launched a company playbook, and created and led major service growth initiatives,” the nomination for Sprouse said. “Her leadership inspires future industry professionals (including the female sales reps on her team), fosters team advancement, and consistently delivers excellence,” the nomination said. Sprouse said she enjoys the constantly changing nature of the industry and is pleased to see more women in positions throughout the business, including in leadership. “The best part of my job is not only watching my team succeed, but the customers too,” said Sprouse, who said her approach to leadership is one of serving as a coach and mentor. “I tell them, ‘I am only as good as you guys are,” she said. Sprouse said she would like to continue her career in the industry. “I want to continue staying in leadership. I love the aftermarket. That’s what I’ve been doing from day one, first as a rep and now in management,” she said. To others in the industry, she advised learning the technical side of the business thoroughly. “Find mentors. They’re the ones that saw the potential in me before I did,” she said. Sprouse said she hopes to see more women get involved in the industry in the future and encourages those who are currently in the business to voice their thoughts. “Speak up, even if you’re the only female in the room,” she said. Brittany Byrne Byrne, whose background is in industrial engineering, has worked at Seegrid for approximately six years as a principal application engineer. Seegrid delivers customized AMR solutions that meet the changing needs of today’s manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing facilities, according to the business. In her current role, Byrne said she serves as the primary technical point of contact for customers. “We meet to understand material handling pain points and goals for automation,” said Byrne, who said she enjoys the problem-solving aspect of her work. “I love solution design,” she said, adding that she particularly enjoys working on sites that are open to new opportunities and optimization. “I really enjoy the diversity of the work that I get to do,” Byrne said. Her nomination for Material Handling Wholesaler detailed how Byrne taps into her expertise to develop “sophisticated AMR solutions and deployments that maximize operational efficiency and bring

Redefining the Road magazine, the official magazine of the Women In Trucking Association (WIT), announced today the recipients of the 2024 “Top Companies for Women to Work in Transportation.” The magazine created the award in 2018 to support an element of WIT’s mission: to promote the accomplishments of companies that are focused on the employment of women in the trucking industry, according to Jennifer Hedrick, president and CEO of WIT. There are a number of characteristics that distinguish the companies recognized on this list, according to Brian Everett, publisher of Redefining the Road. These characteristics include corporate cultures that foster gender diversity; competitive compensation and benefits; flexible hours and work requirements; professional development opportunities; and career advancement opportunities. Qualified companies also must meet minimum requirements of what they report through the WIT Index, the industry barometer that benchmarks and measures the percentage of women who make up critical roles in transportation. The list includes a diverse range of trucking company types, including motor carriers, third-party logistics companies, and original equipment manufacturers. These companies will be recognized at the upcoming WIT Accelerate! Conference & Expo, which will be held Nov. 10-13 in Dallas, Texas. International Motors, formerly Navistar, is the sponsor of this year’s program. “Companies named to this prestigious list must demonstrate corporate attributes that are essential to any successful enterprise committed to gender diversity as part of their corporate strategy,” said Everett. “Qualifying companies to this list involves a two-step process. First, nominations by companies are carefully reviewed to ensure they meet a minimum threshold of qualifications. Then, the final ballot of companies is voted on by individuals in the industry. This is the seventh year of this prestigious recognition program, and it garnered a record number of more than 31,000 votes to identify and validate the final companies named to the list.” Companies generating the largest number of votes are named to the “Elite 30” of the 2024 Top Companies for Women to Work in Transportation. They are Air Products, ArcBest, Averitt, Cummins Inc., Daimler Truck North America, Epes Transport System, Estes Express Lines, FedEx, Great Dane, International Motors, J.B.

Lorri Lewis was named a trailblazer, Jennifer Timblin was honored as a rising star Hyster Company announces Director of Global Dealer Marketing Enablement Lorri Lewis and Global Big Truck Marketing Strategy and Activation Manager Jennifer Timblin are winners of the 2024 Women in Supply Chain awards, presented by industry publications Supply & Demand Chain Executive and Food Logistics. These awards honor female supply chain leaders whose accomplishments, mentorship, and examples set a foundation for women at all levels of the supply chain. “Lorri and Jennifer’s dedication and leadership at Hyster can’t be overstated,” says Jennifer Meyers, Brand Marketing and Global Activation Manager at Hyster. “Lorri has excelled in every role she’s held in her more than 40 years at Hyster and has paved the way for so many female leaders in our organization, including me. In such a short time, Jennifer has proven herself indispensable and progressed through roles with increasing responsibility, starting as an administrative assistant to now holding a global leadership position for this renowned brand. Both women have had and continue to have a huge impact at Hyster and truly deserve this recognition.” A third-generation Hyster employee with two sons who have followed in her footsteps, Lewis is a true trailblazer in materials handling. Throughout her long tenure, she has applied her tremendous skills in many areas, from graphic design, brand marketing, and event planning to sales, dealer relations, and even inventory analysis. But she is perhaps best known for developing highly successful events, including attention-grabbing booths for the industry’s largest tradeshows and leading hundreds of “roadshows.” During roadshows, Lewis is out in the field herself, helping to host customers at dealer locations or visiting the customer’s own facility to learn more about their specific application. She has been recognized by her peers and leaders for going above and beyond for customer satisfaction, earning the first HYCare award granted by the company’s major accounts team. Timblin is a self-motivated rising star in the supply chain who progressed through the Hyster organization in less than a decade to her current role, in which she manages a team and leads global marketing efforts for the brand’s big truck line of high-capacity forklifts and container handling equipment. She has also managed public relations and communications resources in the Americas, as well as product launch support for the Asia-Pacific region. In recent years, Timblin has organized several high-profile events for Hyster and has championed the brand’s commitment to developing zero-emission solutions that can help even heavy-duty industries make the shift to clean power alternatives for materials handling equipment traditionally powered by diesel and internal combustion engines (ICE). As a manager and mentor, Timblin helps others to identify and act on opportunities to grow their careers. She encourages her employees and mentees to be proactive about their own professional development and is intentional about having conversations with colleagues to understand what work they find fulfilling, outline goals, and pave pathways to help achieve them.

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Natalie Kathain as its August 2024 Member of the Month. Kathain is the chief human resources officer (CHRO) at Amerit Fleet Solutions. Kathain’s passion for her role as the CHRO at Amerit Fleet Solutions is palpable. She loves her job! She has been responsible for driving human resources strategy, developing talent, employee engagement, and communications, and overseeing safety and compliance programs for this fleet maintenance and repair provider. Kathain has embraced a modern, personalized leadership model with business professionals helping to form and implement Amerit Fleet Solutions’ strategy. “We’re going to elevate this company,” she says. She takes pride in creating and cultivating a diverse, inclusive work environment. Understanding working moms’ challenges, Kathain was resolute in being a voice for women in the male-dominated industry. “When I became a manager at Amerit,” she recalls, “I promised myself to promote and elevate women, and I am proud of the strides we’ve made.” Amerit Fleet Solutions continues to grant platforms for other women in the organization. Today, Amerit Fleet Solutions boasts a thriving learning and development team that crafts comprehensive training programs, fostering continuous professional growth, according to Kahtain. The Amerit team works tirelessly to ensure Amerit employees are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in the fleet industry. To further enhance employee satisfaction, Amerit Fleet Solutions’ dedicated engagement team actively promotes a positive, inclusive culture. This team now implements strategic initiatives designed to increase employee involvement and retention and recognize achievements. Amerit Fleet Solutions has a thriving employee resource group (ERG) program, as part of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiative. Amerit developed the Women’s Initiative Network, an ERG dedicated to empowering women, establishing connections, and adding value to communities while developing unity in the workplace. They meet every month, and women come together and support each other. Kathain’s advice for women in the industry is not just a suggestion but a call to action. She urges them to seek out like-minded individuals to work with: “Find women who support each other. Build relationships and partnerships and have positive conversations with each other. Kathain is the first C-level female executive at Amerit, marking much progress for the company and the fleet management industry. Kathain wants women to understand that they can succeed in trucking and maintenance in supervisory roles, ADP roles, director roles, senior leadership, and others. “I want them to know that there’s growth and diversity in this industry and that we can call on so many more that we can help elevate,” she says. “We can change the narrative, the whole perspective that people now have. As we bring more women into this industry, we will be a changed industry.” It is worthy to note that only 4% of truck technicians are women, according to the 2024 WIT Index, the industry barometer to regularly benchmark and measure the percentage of women who make up critical roles in transportation. However, in contrast to this low percentage, women in leadership roles are in the double digits: Approximately 34.5% of company leaders (defined as those who supervise others) are women and 28% of C-suite executives are women. Kathain is honored to have the opportunity to make an impact and strive for excellence, which is proven by her persistence in adapting to industry developments. “Just the privilege to be in this role working alongside such an amazing team is so gratifying,” She says. Kathain’s number one goal as CHRO is to “drive equality one mile at a time” as she fosters an inclusive workplace where every individual’s voice is heard and valued, paving the way for a brighter, more equitable future. “I also have had amazing women who have elevated and mentored me, and I want women to be promoted, elevated, and get a seat at the table in return.” Kathain holds on to her legacy and excels at championing her people. Her journey is not just impressive but also inspiring for those who aspire to grow in their careers.

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Christina Parrillo as its June 2024 Member of the Month. Parrillo is the Field Services Midwest Branch Manager at Clean Harbors. Growing up, Parrillo desired to be a pediatrician and began the pre-med track at the University of Michigan. However, about two and a half years in, she had a change of heart. Being what she believes is a “science nerd,” she took interest in a class on hazardous waste management. The course was only offered at certain times because the professor who taught it actively worked in the industry. She eventually took an internship with that professor, and they hired her at the end of the internship. At that time, the only position open was for Rodman and she took it, beginning her career in the industry which ultimately led her to Clean Harbors. Parrillo’s journey is a testament to her resilience and gratitude. In a world where adversity often tests one’s resolve, she has risen above life’s challenges, leaving an indelible mark on society. Her story is about determination and a profound gratitude for her accomplishments. As a female leader at Clean Harbors, she has overcome adversities and significantly impacted her career, embodying the essence of gratitude in all aspects of her life. As an inspiring female leader, Parrillo has embarked on a path of professional excellence. With unwavering determination, she has continued to climb the corporate ladder at Clean Harbors while significantly impacting the employees she is surrounded by. For Parrillo, the hazardous waste industry is a dirty job, especially in field services and she believes it can be draining not only mentally but physically at times. Parrillo has channeled her experiences into a driving force, propelling her and her team, which she cares deeply for, towards success. Parrillo was the first female in the Great Lakes division to be promoted to branch manager overseeing the field services line of business. With more than 15 years of experience in multiple leadership roles, Parrillo leads one of seven employee resource groups, WAVES (Women Advancing Our Values in Environmental Services), across an organization of 22,000 employees. She has been a pivotal leader in significantly impacting the females of Clean Harbors by implementing female-fitted uniforms while cultivating a culture of psychological safety for the WAVES members she serves within the workplace. Aside from her everyday role as a branch manager, Parrillo also manages multiple drivers while ensuring her customers are receiving the highest level of service from her team. The two things she loves about her job are working for an environmental company that makes a difference and that no two days are ever the same. Parrillo appreciates the sense of sisterhood between women in the industry, as it fosters a sense of unity, support, and understanding that can enhance productivity and collaboration. While women often face unique challenges and barriers in the workplace, she believes having a strong network of supportive women can make all the difference. “As a woman, I have learned from others through their experiences, challenges, and skills, gaining great respect and knowledge for what we do in this industry,” said Parrillo. Parrillo would like women interested in the trucking industry to know that it is great industry, but sometimes you might need to have thick skin saying, “get the lay of the land and know when to pick your battles. You have several sources you can pull from to get any help or information you might need.”

Their achievements prove that success isn’t defined by gender. We’re extremely proud to recognize each of them as this year’s Driver of the Year,” said Fernando Cortes, Senior Vice President of Transportation, Walmart. Specifically, EnerSys has donated an IRONCLAD® Deserthog battery, which will be used to power a pink Toyota FBE20U 3-wheel electric forklift vehicle. All the proceeds from the rental truck will be donated to support the Susan G. Komen® foundation and its ongoing efforts to assist breast cancer patients and fund continuing research for a cure. “While EnerSys has partnered with Toyota and its subsidiaries for several years on various charitable programs, this is the first time we’ve been able to support patients and families affected by such a devastating disease,” said Rick Losacker, Senior OEM Manager, Motive Power at EnerSys. “Millions of women and their loved ones have been affected by breast cancer, so it’s deeply humbling to be able to help power a campaign with such heartfelt meaning and purpose. We hope this helps broaden awareness of this important topic within our industry and beyond.” The customized hot pink forklift, adorned with the tagline, “Lifting Up Hope,” provides an opportunity to help build awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection as well as the latest research, resources and treatment options available to women and men within the material handling industry. The vehicle was officially unveiled during 2023 Toyota Week in September. Founded in 1978, ProLift Toyota Material Handling provides new, used, and rental forklifts and other warehouse solutions, as well as training. With headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, it serves customers in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia. The rental truck will be available to customers across ProLift’s entire service territory.

According to new data from the 2023 WIT Index, which was released recently by the Women In Trucking Association (WIT), the percentage of female equipment technicians in corporations with for-hire or private fleets in the commercial freight transportation industry has shown a substantial increase. The WIT Index is the industry barometer to benchmark and measure each year the percentage of women who make up critical roles in transportation. The 2023 WIT Index shows that more than 7% of technicians in companies in transportation are women. This number reflects an increase of nearly 4% from the reported 3.7% of women in technician roles in the 2022 WIT Index. “A major concern of the trucking industry is the widely reported shortage of professional truck drivers, who play a vital role in the U.S. economy by safely transporting the nation’s freight,” said Jennifer Hedrick, president and chief executive officer of WIT. “But drivers cannot complete that mission when their trucks are in the shop or broken down on the side of the road – whether it’s caused by a problem with the engine aftertreatment system, an electrical issue, or a problem with the truck’s brakes. That’s when it becomes abundantly clear that skilled truck maintenance technicians are indispensable in keeping professional drivers productive, on the road, and delivering on-time.” Initiated in 2016, the WIT Index is based upon reported statistics by companies in transportation, including for-hire trucking companies, private fleets, transportation intermediaries, railroads, ocean carriers, equipment manufacturers, and technology companies. Data involving the 2023 WIT Index was confidentially gathered from January through April of 2023 from 350 participating companies of various sizes operating in the trucking industry. Percentages are reported only as aggregate totals of respondents rather than by individual company. In 2022, WIT expanded its collection of the percentage of women to include not only technicians but also operations, human resources and talent management. The WIT Index historically also has identified the percentage of women who are in leadership roles and professional drivers with the commercial freight transportation industry.
