The American Logistics Aid Network, or ALAN, released an announcement regarding last week’s flooding in Texas. “A few weeks ago, I used a Hamilton lyric to describe one of the events that had made me the happiest this summer. Today, I find myself compelled to use another one of its lyrics for a very different reason,” said Kathy Fulton, Executive Director of ALAN. “There are moments that the words don’t reach. There is suffering too terrible to name.” I’m thinking, of course, about this weekend’s floods in Texas – and the devastating death toll they have left in their wake. All of us at ALAN are heartbroken for the many people who have lost a beloved family member or friend because of this disaster. And we have already begun to channel that heartbreak into action. Over the past few days, we’ve been coordinating with our non-profit partners who are assisting with early response efforts, and preparing to support them with the critical logistics services, supplies, and expertise they’ll require. Please stay in touch with us frequently over the next few days and weeks, as there’s a possibility that your supply chain assistance or financial support may be urgently needed. Meanwhile, resist the urge to head to Texas with truckloads of donated goods (it could hamper organized rescue and relief efforts), and if you do feel the need to do something immediate, consider making a cash donation to help support our response activities instead. Above all, please pay attention to weather alerts and consult local flood maps to understand your risk of flooding. Floods truly are among the deadliest of storm-related disasters, so having a pre-established plan for how and when to evacuate will save critical moments when they matter most. Here are some links that will help those affected by the flooding in Texas: Donate: alanaid.org/donate How To Help: alanaid.org/operations Request Support: alanaid.org/request-support State Executive Orders: Texas Governor Abbott issued an amendment on July 5, 2025 to a previously issued Disaster Proclamation declaring Bandera, Bexar, Burnet, Caldwell, Coke, Comal, Concho, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Llano, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Reeves, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson Counties. The proclamation authorizes the use of all available resources of the state government and political subdivisions to cope with the disaster. Active Transportation Waivers Title: FMCSA Issued Emergency Declaration for Texas Effective: 07/04/25 | Expires on: 07/16/25 Description: Pursuant to 49 CFR 390.23 due to severe weather, exemption from Parts 390 through 399 of Title 49 for Hours of Service for drivers providing direct assistance in the disaster area.

The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is assisting in the aid of the historic Los Angeles fires and wanted to share what they are doing and how you can help. Shortly after news of the fires broke, ALAN reached out to our non-profit partners to get a handle on what types of donated logistics services and equipment they anticipate needing – and where. At the moment, ALAN said that local relief organizations have the supplies they require in the short term because nearby communities have been incredibly generous. In fact, these organizations are already being logistically challenged by the outpouring of donations, which need to be sorted, categorized, and organized to get them ready for distribution. Most of these organizations have little to no experience running that kind of ad hoc warehousing and transportation operation – especially under such dire circumstances – so ALAN has been especially busy providing these organizations with the required just-in-time guidance. Along those lines, ALAN will host a California fires logistics call for non-profit organizations on Monday at 3:30 Eastern. (All non-profits are welcome, so if you’re already assisting with relief efforts in the area or are planning to do so in the future, you can register at this link.) ALAN is also gathers and shares key information about how the fires affect logistics infrastructure and resources, including road closures, power outages, curfews, and more. (Check out our Disaster Microsite and Supply Chain Intelligence Center for details.) These free resources exist to help non-profits and businesses make better-informed decisions about how to keep essential supplies like food and water moving into disaster-affected areas, which is crucial at times like these, and we are honored to be able to provide it. Finally, ALAN is preparing to fill requests for donated logistics assistance – which is where you come in. . . If you have logistics capabilities like warehouse space, trucks, equipment, or supplies you’d be willing to donate to support fire relief efforts, please offer them now. ALAN will need a lot of support in the coming days, weeks, and months. And the more advanced information we have about available resources, the more quickly we’ll be able to fulfill requests for assistance and get survivors the help they need. In addition, please visit our Disaster Micro-Site often. It’s where ALAN will post all requests for fire relief assistance we receive – and where we already have many unfilled requests related to other disasters. ALAN will be grateful if you could help us fill one or more of them. Please also consider donating to support our response activities. We rely on your financial support, and your gift will allow us to continue providing the donated logistics assistance that is so critical to helping communities like Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and others recover. On a final note, please don’t try to send supplies to Southern California right now. Relief organizations and disaster survivors have no place to store or keep them – and trying to handle the wave of incoming products can turn into a major challenge at a time when they’re dealing with other priorities. “On behalf of all of us at ALAN, thank you for being part of our support system. Although the first two weeks of 2025 have already contained more than their fair share of fire and (freezing) rain, we are grateful to be working with you,” said Kathy Fulton, Executive Director of ALAN.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) recently signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with three safety organizations that will expand the Society’s efforts to advance worker safety and health. The Society extended an existing alliance with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and created new strategic partnerships with the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA). The three alliances are among many joint agreements ASSP now has in place to improve the well-being of workers in all industries. “We recognize the benefits of collaboration to improve occupational safety and health practices while elevating the voice of our profession,” said ASSP President Pam Walaski, CSP, FASSP. “Together, we strive to strengthen advocacy efforts, implement programs, and create standards that reduce worker illnesses, injuries, and fatalities.” Over several years, ASSP and NIOSH have worked cooperatively on conducting and implementing workplace safety research, promoting best practices and professional development opportunities, and encouraging employers to use safety and health management systems that are the cornerstone of successful businesses. ASSP’s work with ISEA will better connect the Society to leading businesses and corporate leaders involved in the manufacturing, testing, and application of personal protective equipment and safety products. The agreement will also support the development of voluntary national consensus standards. ASSP’s work with MCAA will widen the Society’s access to safety professionals through greater involvement in MCAA’s safety and health conference – one of the longest-running construction conferences. The annual event offers training and education courses designed to improve safety practices among mechanical contractors. “Our mutual interests in improving the well-being of workers create valuable opportunities to work together,” Walaski said. “Our MOUs with a range of organizations enhance our ability to engage in more stakeholder meetings and safety education events throughout the year and expand the safety profession’s influence in optimizing organizational performance.” ASSP is the world’s oldest professional safety organization, with 35,000 members who have advanced worker well-being and the safety and health profession since the Society’s inception in 1911. ASSP provides member communities, serves as a trusted advisor, and elevates safety through workforce development.

Manufacturing Technology Orders grow in May 2024 despite sustained high interest rates

Manufacturing technology orders, measured by the U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders Report published by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, totaled $386.7 million in May 2024. New machinery orders were up nearly 22% from April 2024 and 6.5% over May 2023. This is the first month in 2024 where the value of orders placed exceeded those of the same month the previous year. Through the first five months of 2024, orders totaled $1.8 billion, a 12.2% decrease compared to 2023. Manufacturers have realized they can no longer outwait the Fed’s “higher for longer” interest rate strategy. As a result, they are beginning to increase capital equipment purchases to meet the sustained demand for goods and machinery from consumers and businesses, even as high interest rates persist. Despite 2024’s mild slump in machinery orders compared to the beginning of 2023, cutting tool orders, as measured by the Cutting Tool Market Report, a collaboration between AMT and the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI), show 2024 consumption holding steady at record levels. This indicates that despite reported hesitation to invest in additional machinery, production levels remain elevated, which is confirmed by the measure of industrial production from the Federal Reserve. Contract machine shops, the largest consumer of manufacturing technology, increased their orders from April to May 2024 but significantly less than the industry’s overall growth. While some OEMs have made additional investments despite heightened interest rates, contract machine shops have consistently failed to keep pace with the overall market throughout 2024. Electrical equipment manufacturers are having the best start to the year since the record-setting start of 2022. Similarly, power generation and transmission equipment manufacturers are investing at the second-highest year-to-date rate since 2008. These industries undoubtedly benefit from the government investment authorized by the CHIPS and Infrastructure Acts and are, therefore, less sensitive to interest rates than others. As previously reported, the Biden administration is in a rush to spend the remaining money allocated by Congress under these bills in case President Joe Biden does not win reelection in November. That spending could accelerate, given the public’s response to Biden’s debate performance at the end of June. The automotive sector continued to purchase machinery but at a much slower pace than the previous two years. Vehicle assemblies increased in May 2024 and remained above the monthly average this year. Like manufacturers awaiting lower interest rates before investing in machinery, consumers may have grown tired of waiting out the Fed, as new vehicle sales increased in April and May. The Fed’s interest rate path has thrown a wrench in many economic forecasts since the beginning of the year. The outlook for manufacturing technology orders was no different. The beginning of the year fell well short of expectations, but the lag behind 2023 has narrowed in recent months. Whatever course the Federal Reserve eventually takes with interest rates, the USMTO data shows the appetite for additional manufacturing capacity growing as we approach September’s IMTS 2024 – The International Manufacturing Technology Show, the largest manufacturing trade show in the Western Hemisphere.

MHI and our Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC) division are deeply saddened by the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic event. “We are humbled by the efforts of the first responders and rescue teams for their bravery in the face of danger. We stand in solidarity with the city of Baltimore, the state of Maryland, and all involved as they navigate through this incredibly challenging time,” said John Paxton, CEO of MHI. “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of resilience to keep the supply chain moving even during crisis and disruption. As a major East Coast logistics hub, supply chains will face major challenges in the days ahead as the Port of Baltimore and surrounding intermodal, trucking, and warehousing infrastructure are disrupted.”, added Paxton. The robustness and agility of the supply chain industry point to a rapid recovery from this tragedy. As associations serving this industry, MHI and WERC are committed to supporting its members and the broader community during this recovery.

The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) is deeply saddened by the tragic collapse early this morning of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland. Our hearts are heavy as we agonize over the devastation caused by this catastrophic event. According to reports, the collapse occurred after the bridge was struck by a container ship, leading to a significant portion of the structure falling into the river below. The impact of this incident has been felt not only by the people of Baltimore and Maryland but also by the entire region, as the Francis Scott Key Bridge serves as a vital link in the transportation network. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to the community as they grapple with this unimaginable loss. Additionally, we stand in solidarity with the Maryland Department of Transportation and our member, the Maryland Transportation Authority, which operates the Francis Scott Key Bridge. We offer our full support and assistance as they work tirelessly to assess the situation, conduct rescue operations, and begin the process of recovery and rebuilding. As an organization dedicated to promoting the safety and resilience of transportation infrastructure, IBTTA recognizes the importance of thorough investigations into the causes of such incidents to prevent future tragedies. We remain committed to working with authorities and stakeholders to ensure the safety and integrity of bridges and other critical transportation assets. In this time of sorrow and uncertainty, let us come together as a community to support one another and offer assistance to those in need. The road to recovery will be long, but with resilience, determination, and the support of each other, we will overcome this tragedy.

Staffing employment held steady during the week of March 11-17, with the ASA Staffing Index holding a rounded value of 90. Staffing jobs were down 8.4% from the same period last year. Staffing companies mentioned no one primary factor that limited further growth. New starts, however, in the 11th week of the year decreased by 8.3% from the prior week. Nearly one-third of all staffing companies (32%) reported gains in new assignments week to week. The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average edged up from the prior week to hold at a rounded value of 90, and temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Mar, 17 was 8.8% lower than the same period in 2023. “Staffing employment did not realize a much-anticipated resurgence in growth at the beginning of 2024. Whether the industry has settled into a new post-pandemic equilibrium remains an open question, but current trends affirm that staffing companies must be more proactive about seeking opportunities amid reduced labor market churn,” said Noah Yosif, chief economist at ASA. “Staffing companies, like businesses in many other segments of the economy, are simply weathering the storm as economic conditions remain tight, while demand among clients and talent wanes.” This week will be used in the March monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on April 5. The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA Staffing Starts are the number of temporary and contract employees placed in new assignments during the reporting week. ASA research shows that staffing employment has historically been a coincident economic indicator.

Acquisition to Expand Rental Inspection Software’s Reach Worldwide Record360, a rental inspection software solution, has been acquired by Point of Rental Software, the largest company globally in rental management software. The acquisition is designed to fuel Record360’s product development and growth, allowing the team to accelerate the pace of product innovation, increase its global footprint, and continue setting the standard for mobile digital documentation tools. “Point of Rental aligns with our values of bringing innovative products to market while focusing on responsible long-term growth and customer service,” said Record360 CEO Abby Chao. “Because our products are complementary, Record360 customers will benefit as we discover new features we can build into our product.” Record360 will continue to operate as its own business entity, adding inspection software to Point of Rental’s valuable suite of RMS-independent solutions, which also include e-commerce, consumer portal, electronic signature collection, and integrated payments. “We see immense potential in the abilities of Record360 to transform the industry and we’re excited to combine our resources to realize that potential,” said Point of Rental CEO Wayne Harris. “We’ll continue to prioritize Record360’s autonomy and increase integration points through the Open API so that any ERP system can fully integrate with Record360.” Leadership from both organizations will talk about the future of the united business at Point of Rental’s pre-ARA Show happy hour in New Orleans on Feb. 18. For those not able to attend, they’ll also host an online webinar to share the vision for Record360 in the weeks after the show.

Mississauga, Ontario-based Unirope Limited has added 50,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space to its headquarters, improving lead times by as much as 400% Unirope is a manufacturer, distributor, testing, certification, and inspection of high-performance wire rope and rigging products. It has additional facilities in Quebec and Alberta; the three sites combine to deliver service nationwide and to select customers in the U.S. and Europe. The expansion represents the completion of a journey that started in 2018, before ground-breaking two years later, and a major construction project that concluded in 2021. Since then, further investment has been committed to equipping the facility with state-of-the-art machining and fabrication equipment, centered on wire rope fabrication, synthetic sling manufacturing, and computer numerical control (CNC) technology. Justin Brown, president at Unirope, said: “At a minimum, we have cut lead times in half, and in the best case we have seen a 400% improvement. We are moving towards modernizing the traditional rigging shop model. The words ‘rigging shop’ and ‘modern’ are rarely mentioned in the same breath. Many of the products are heavy and lined with grease, and most factories are stuck in the 1980s with equipment from the 1960s. Not us.” He continued: “We have implemented material handling solutions to help with heavy lifting; installed modern machinery to make reeling, cutting, and fabrication easier; utilized technology to put work instructions at the fingertips of production workers; installed a full machine shop with modern [CNC] capabilities for custom wire rope end fittings; upgraded ventilation to keep the air clean; and fitted environmentally friendly plant lighting alongside fit-for-purpose test units.” The majority of Unirope’s work is on customized rigging products; an interesting statistic, for example, is that 90% of all chain slings that it manufactured in 2023 were unique, either in size, length, or configuration. The business can proof test up to 1.3 million pounds, and the highest single vertical sling capacity in the portfolio is 600,000 pounds. 68 years in the making Unirope already had two warehouses in Mississauga, but it was running out of space to store growing inventory, and the situation was starting to impede production. It would have been impossible to navigate an aggressive phase of growth without expanding and streamlining operations. Brown said: “With strategic machinery updates, we were able to eliminate certain labor-intensive tasks and ease the burden on production employees. The work is difficult, so anything we could do to make the jobs more efficient, eased the physical impact on our employees. Remember, unemployment is at an all-time low, so we have to optimize our workforce. The overall investment led to efficiencies that allowed us to eliminate bottlenecks, deliver faster, and increase our outputs.” An automatic wire rope cutting line, plus additional swaggers and upgraded annealing machines will be operated with an additional test bed and a third Twin-Path® machine. Additional warehouse space also meant that inventory could be increased across all product lines, including Python® high-performance wire rope, Grade 100 chain, and a range of Crosby rigging hardware. Python® wire rope is stocked in a wide variety of constructions for tower cranes, mobile and truck cranes, overhead cranes, and gantry cranes. These ropes are widely used in construction, automotive, and industrial applications. Unirope also stocks a variety of other standard and custom ropes, all meeting national and international standards. Brown added: “We have built a diversified customer base over the last 68 years and continue to build on that strategy. Our customers, without exception, are looking for professional and attentive service. They want our input and expertise; they are not looking for the cheapest and untested; they want reliability and quality.”
