Railroads step up veteran hiring in 2012
One-in-four rail employees former military.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) salutes the men and women who have served in our military and remains committed to its almost 200-year practice of hiring members of the United States armed forces. Today, roughly 25 percent of all rail employees have military service, and AAR estimates that one-in-five of the more than 15,000 people freight railroads expect to hire this year also will have served in our military. “This Memorial Day is not just a time to remember those who have proudly served, but also to respond to the needs of the thousands of men and women returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan looking for their next career,” said AAR President and CEO Edward R. Hamberger.  “Railroads, like our military, are mission critical to the health and security of our nation. So on this Memorial Day, we not only salute veterans and thank them for their military service, we also want them to know freight railroads stand ready and proud to offer them their next career in service to our country.” Hamberger noted that men and women with military service often have skills that translate into successful railroad careers. “Their courage, adherence to safety, sense of teamwork and adaptability make them ideal railroaders,” he said. Freight railroads work with the armed forces to identify talented people looking to transition from military service to private sector employment, and have instituted targeted recruitment programs and offer competitive benefits, Hamberger said.
