UAW votes to authorize strike

The United Auto Workers voted Jan. 30 to allow its leadership to call a strike against Caterpillar Inc. if terms of a new contract cannot agreed upon, the Peoria Journal Star reports.

UAW members at seven locals - including Local 974 in East Peoria, Ill. - voted by a 94 percent majority to authorize a strike if necessary. The union did not give vote totals.

In addition to Local 974, UAW locals in Decatur, Pontiac and Aurora gave approval to the strike authorization, as well as locals in Denver, Memphis, Tenn.; and York, Pa. Local 974 is the largest of those locals, with more than 5,000 members.

The current six-year contract expires March 1. UAW and Caterpillar have been negotiating since Dec. 15.
