MHW extends its condolences to the family and friends of William Portman, founder of Portman Equipment Company, who passed away at his home on August 31 at the age of 88, hours before his company’s 50th anniversary. A World War II veteran, Mr. Portman founded Portman Equipment (now Equipment Depot Ohio) in 1960. Though he retired years ago, he still came into the office occasionally, including the day before his death. An advocate for the material handling industry, Mr. Portman also served on the Board of fellow MHEDA Member Advanced Handling Systems, Inc. He was known for his leadership in mentoring young employees. Mr. Portman is survived by sons Wym and Rob, a former U.S. Representative, daughter Ginna Portman Amis, and 9 grandchildren.
